Alumni Update: Alicia Ray ’06

Alicia Ray (née Winebarger), originally from Elkin, North Carolina, graduated in 2006 with a B.S. in elementary education. She completed a M.A. in education in instructional technology and a master’s in library science, both from East Carolina University.

Currently, she is the Lead Digital Learning and Media Innovation Facilitator for Meadowview Magnet Middle School in Surry County, North Carolina.

“When I decided to become a teacher, I knew that Appalachian State University was the best place to be. The reputation of excellence in teacher education made App State my undisputed first choice. I still remember the day I received my acceptance package, the excitement I felt while opening it. While there, I learned so much about best practices in the classroom and I made friendships that are still strong to this day; App will always hold a very special place in my heart.”

“I recently completed a three-year pilot position, which formally merges the roles of a digital learning coach and library-media specialist at a STEM magnet middle school,” said Ray. “I am continuing in this role, serving both students and teachers as a librarian and instructional coach.”

“My job at the middle school brings me great joy, and I love that every day brings a new challenge!”

Impacting Education in Her Community

Ray is making an impact on education in her community. Her first book, Educational Eye Exam: Creating Your Vision for Education, was released in September 2019.

“This book follows my journey through a visit to the optometrist and the connections I made to education,” said Ray.

Throughout the book, readers are encouraged to take a look at their own core beliefs in education, and through that introspection on core beliefs, they create their educational vision and live it out loud.

Ray is also an avid blogger (aliciaray.com), inspiring others through book challenges and “instilling the desire for knowledge”.
