Alumni Update: Anita Cole ’90

Anita Cole (née Swaim), originally from Sophia, North Carolina, graduated in 1990 with a B.S. in elementary education.

“Appalachian has always been known to provide excellent preparation for those entering the teaching profession.  In addition to the high quality training I would receive at App, I chose ASU because of the beauty of the mountains.  There is no better place to study than in the Appalachian Mountains.”

Currently, Cole is an instructional coach and multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) math coach for Harnett County Schools in Lillington, North Carolina. She coaches teachers in grades K-5 with a math focus.

Impacting Education in Her Community

Cole is making an impact on education in her community.

“I coach teachers throughout my LEA in the use of best practices, deeply knowing standards, aligning instruction to the standards, pacing, and much more in order to enhance instruction and prepare students for the future,” said Cole.

In addition to coaching teachers in Harnett County, Cole also works with the Exceptional Children Division of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction as a Regional Math Coach.

“In that capacity, I provide coaching to Foundations of Math instructors within the Sandhills Region,” said Cole.
