Alumni Update: Brandy Webb ’17

Brandy Webb (née Booe), originally from Burlington, North Carolina, graduated in 2017 with a B.S. in elementary education. Currently, Brandy is a second-grade teacher for North Wilkesboro Elementary School (NWES) in North Wilkesboro, NC.

In addition to teaching, Webb is the chairperson of the yearbook committee and a coach for the Girls on the Run program at her school.

“I am so proud to be an alumna of Appalachian’s Reich College of Education and a member of a community that includes so many phenomenal educators,” said Webb.

"There were many reasons I chose Appalachian State, but the biggest reason was because of being accepted into the ACES (Appalachian Community of Education Scholars) program through the College of Education. Through the ACES program, I was able to take part in numerous professional development opportunities as an undergraduate student that I would not have had access to otherwise. The RCOE and ACES program helped me to become better prepared for my career as an educator."

“To all prospective teachers please remember, there are certainly ups and downs, but in the end, it's all worth it when you see how much your students grow by the end of the year,” she said. “Teaching is hard, don't let anyone tell you otherwise, but all the effort and exhaustion pays off when you look at the faces of ‘your kids.’”

Impacting Education in Her Community

Webb is making an impact on education in her community, specifically North Wilkesboro Elementary School’s Singapore Math program. This program is a hands-on, discovery-based approach to teaching mathematics. Students are constantly engaged in their learning and are empowered to take ownership of their own mathematics education.

Webb and several of her colleagues have traveled around the country to further their education and understanding of Singapore Mathematics by attending various conferences and workshops.

As the North Carolina model school for Singapore Mathematics, my colleagues and I at NWES  constantly strive to further our understanding of this approach to teaching mathematics and to teach other teachers. NWES presents a yearly Singapore Math conference to aid in the professional development of other teachers,” said Webb.
