Alumni Update: Brooke Anderson ‘16

Brooke Anderson, originally from Hickory, North Carolina, graduated in 2016 with a M.A. in Professional School Counseling.

Currently, Brooke is a school counselor for Cabarrus County Schools in Concord, NC. She serves as the school counselor for grades 9-11 at Cabarrus Early College of Technology. “I love working in an early college setting because I am able to spend the majority of my time supporting students socially and emotionally in addition to meeting academic, college, and career standards,” she said. “My favorite part of my job is proving small group counseling.”

"I chose Appalachian because of it's well-known reputation for its school of education.  The staff is amazing and supportive, and I knew it would be the best possible opportunity."

Recently, Brooke’s school received recognition from the American School Counselors Association (ASCA). Cabarrus Early College of Technology was awarded the designation as a Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) School.  The RAMP designation recognizes schools across the nation that are committed to delivering an exemplary comprehensive school counseling program. Currently, Cabarrus Tech is the only school in this region to receive this designation.

Impacting Education in Her Community

Brooke is making an impact on education in her community:

  • Providing resources, referrals, supports, and academic and social/emotional interventions for all students.

  • Examining barriers that students and families face that hinders their education and advocate for their needs to help them succeed in school.

  • Developing a local partnership for our school and hosting annual family and community nights.

  • Creating a comprehensive school counseling program and becoming a RAMP (Recognized ASCA Model Program) School, which demonstrates the school uses data to drive interventions that show positive change and results.

“Appalachian State has, without a doubt, prepared me to best serve students and families as a school counselor, and without such a wonderful program, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” noted Brooke.
