Leatha Fields-Carey, originally from Asheboro, North Carolina, graduated in 1991 with a B.S. English secondary education.
Currently Fields-Carey is an English teacher for the Research Triangle High School in Durham, North Carolina. She teaches ninth grade English language arts.
“I chose Appalachian because I wanted to go into teaching, and Appalachian had the reputation of being the best teacher education program in the state.”
Impacting Education in Her Community
Fields-Carey is making an impact on education in her community.
“I work at a small charter school that focuses on STEM, flipped learning, and personalized learning,” said Fields-Carey. “Through innovative practices and outreach to schools in our area and beyond, we devote ourselves every day to improving outcomes for students and challenging teachers to think about education differently.”
