Angela Hicks Joins RCOE as Field Experience Coordinator

Angela Hicks has joined the Office of Field Experience in the Reich College of Education (RCOE) as the Field Experience Coordinator.

As coordinator, Hicks will administer field experience opportunities and requirements for RCOE students including:

  • collecting and organizing applications and department recommendations for field experiences in order to determine ideal placements for RCOE students;
  • developing and monitoring clinical internship databases; and
  • advising and collaborating with university field supervisors, human resource directors, and other stakeholders to ensure the best experience.

Prior to this position, Hicks worked as the Office Manager for the Office of Human Resources at Appalachian State University and Children’s Ministry Coordinator at Bethel Baptist Church. She also has extensive experience working in schools as a Speech-Language Pathologist in Lexington City Schools and Watauga County Schools.

“I am most excited about returning to my first love - public education,” said Hicks. “I am hopeful that as Field Experience Coordinator I will be able to positively impact the lives and field experiences of our RCOE students as they begin their journey in the very important work and service as educators.”

Hicks is extremely familiar with App State. She is a proud alumna of the university, having received a Bachelor of Science in communication sciences and disorders in 1996 and a Master of Arts degree in the same field two years later. Her family is connected to the university, as well.

“I am Appalachian born and bred, and this university is an important part of my history. I am excited that it is going to be part of my future, too,” commented Hicks.

She continued, “My mother worked at Appalachian for over 30 years in various business affairs offices across campus. My husband is working on his 29th year at Appalachian in Materials Management. I have supervised numerous App State Communication Disorders graduate students while working in the local school system. Appalachian State University is just a natural fit!”

Hicks enjoys reading, sitting on her front porch, spending time with family, and helping with Children’s Ministry events at her church.

Hicks is also a proud parent. She shared, “I have three amazing kids who have started a part-time business bringing Sunset Slush Classic Italian Ice to the High Country. Our son is the entrepreneur with the initial dream of bringing this coastal treat to the mountains.”

She added, “You can find them at their cart on King Street and at some local festivities and events under the black and gold umbrella.”
