Appalachian Educators Club’s Second Chance Prom Raises Money for App Builds A Home

The Appalachian Educators Club (App Ed) hosted their annual Second Chance Prom on Saturday, April 27 in the Solarium of the Plemmons Student Union on the campus of Appalachian State University. The App Ed’s Social and Public Relations Committee coordinated and hosted the event. The theme was “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody,” with inspiration from the 1920s and The Great Gatsby. Attendees danced, snacked, and socialized the night away.

“I'm so happy that a tradition that App Ed has could be turned into a fundraiser for the community. After all, that's what teaching is all about, helping others and serving the community,” said Nia Robinson, middle grades education major and president of App Ed.

“Second Chance Prom is an opportunity for the Appalachian community to come together to celebrate a year full of great memories and accomplishments,” said Alyssa Parsel, elementary education major and Social and Public Relations Chair.

“A big part of App Ed is having a community of support. Second Chance Prom is an excellent way to not only celebrate a successful year but also connect our club with other members of the Appalachian family in a fun, inviting atmosphere,” said Melanie Werth, elementary education and Social and Public Relations Chair.

All of the proceeds from ticket sales were donated to App Builds A Home, a campus-wide partnership with Watauga County Habitat to build a Habitat home for a local family in need. The students, faculty, and staff of Appalachian State University are coming together to design, fund, and build the home. App Ed’s Second Chance Prom raised $278 towards the fundraising goal.

“I'm so happy that a tradition that App Ed has could be turned into a fundraiser for the community. After all, that's what teaching is all about, helping others and serving the community,” said Nia Robinson, middle grades education major and president of App Ed.

Megan Laws, reading education graduate student and a member of the App Builds a Home planning committee said, “App Builds a Home is very appreciative of Appalachian Educators Club and the Reich College of Education. They have been a leader in fundraising for this unique initiative which is bringing the entire campus together. We look forward to planning Field Day with App Ed in the fall!”
