Appalachian Media Studies Sustainability Photo Contest Winners Announced, Reception is Friday, November 17

Reich College of Education (RCOE) Media Studies faculty is pleased to announce the Appalachian Media Studies Sustainability Photo Contest winners!

The competition focused on the theme of sustainability in broad terms, including sustainability in message or medium.

Why Sustainability?

Sustainability is a core value at Appalachian. In the RCOE, we fully support university sustainability efforts as we endeavor to educate students to become full members in a humane democratic society. Given the numerous and varied challenges we currently face - ecological degradation, a changing climate, the erosion of civil rights, and increasing socioeconomic stratification - it is imperative that we change the way we think about the concepts of progress and development.

Participants were invited to submit up to three photographic images that represent their conception of sustainability. All types of original photographic images (nature, architectural, portraiture, experimental, color, black and white, manipulated, etc.) were considered. There were 83 submissions.

These photos express the wide variety of issues included under the umbrella of sustainability and suggest a number of approaches humans may use to manifest a more just and sustainable world. Contest winners include images of nature, education, innovation, environmental action, and art, and all inspired the judges with their power to pose questions and communicate a vision of the future. We hope that their presence in the hallway in the RCOE will similarly inspire all visitors to the college to think about and discuss our common challenges and their solutions.
