The Appalachian State University’s Career and Technical Education bachelor’s degree program offers a concentration in agriculture education. The program is housed in the Reich College of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction. The concentration is offered in partnership with Wilkes Community College’s Horticulture Technology and Animal Science programs.
“We are excited to partner with Wilkes Community College,” said Dr. Jerianne Taylor, professor and the career and technical education program director. “This concentration addresses a real need.”
According to the National Association of Agriculture Educators (NAAE) website, “Nationwide, there are not enough agriculture teachers to meet the demand.”
“I am so excited that we are part of this collaboration and look forward to the great agriculture education teachers that will come from it.”
“The National Teach Ag Campaign, an initiative of The National Council for Agricultural Education led by NAAE is an effort to combat that while celebrating current agricultural educators,” continued on the NAAE website.
“It also combines outstanding programs in a unique that benefit the students,” Taylor continued. “Wilkes Community College and Appalachian State University faculty were intentional to design a program of study that meets the need of future Agriculture Education teachers and Future Farmers of America advisors.”
“I am so excited that we are part of this collaboration and look forward to the great agriculture education teachers that will come from it,” said Taylor.
The academic program page notes that the concentration “focuses on the preparation of agriculture education teachers in grades 6-12 … to teach a variety of courses in these grades, such as agribusiness, animal science, horticulture and natural resources.”
The program is offered to students enrolled on the main campus.
