College Access Partnership Staff Give Back to the Community

Eighteen College Access Partnership staff volunteered with App Builds a Home over three days this semester as part of their community service project/leave.

"Habitat for Humanity has always held a huge place in my heart, and I have volunteered previously to help build multiple Habitat homes in the Greenwood community,” said Jennifer Denny, GEAR UP Accounting Technician. “Having the opportunity to work with my Appalachian family team made it even more meaningful, and I am blessed to work for a group that supports and encourages giving back to the community.”

“The two days I volunteered with our group were full of team building, laughter, and learning,” she continued. “I'd do it again in a heartbeat!"

App Builds a Home is a partnership between Appalachian State University and Watauga County Habitat for Humanity to help local partner families build safe, affordable homes. In the App State tradition of community partnerships, this home build is a tangible commitment to our community and an opportunity for a campus-wide project to bring together students, faculty, staff, and alumni to help build a home with a local family.

Housed in the Reich College of Education, College Access Partnerships supports students from the Appalachian region of North Carolina in finding their own distinct path to postsecondary education. This is accomplished by supporting the work of teachers, counselors and educators, along with providing direct services to students. College Access Partnerships offers the Upward Bound and GEAR UP programs, as well as additional resources for students, families and educators.
