Department of Learning, Teaching, and Curriculum Receives 2026 Hickory Development Award

The Reich College of Education’s Department of Learning, Teaching, and Curriculum (LTC) has been named the 2026 recipient of the Hickory Development Award, one of three inaugural Hickory Champion Awards presented at the “Cheers for ’Neers” celebration on April 27, 2026.

The award recognizes LTC’s leadership in expanding teacher education programs at App State’s Hickory campus, including the launch of two innovative pathways: the K–9 STEM education program and a part-time, night-time elementary education degree program. These initiatives increase access to higher education and address critical teacher workforce shortages in North Carolina.

Expanding Access to Teacher Education in Western North Carolina

LTC’s elementary education programs are designed to meet regional needs and support working professionals:

  • K–9 STEM Education Program: Prepares and licenses teachers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics for grades kindergarten through ninth, helping strengthen STEM instruction across elementary and middle grades.
  • Part-Time, Night-Time (PTNT) Program: Provides a flexible pathway for individuals with an associate degree—especially working teacher assistants—to earn a bachelor’s degree in elementary education while remaining employed in local schools.

Together, these programs advance App State Hickory’s mission to provide accessible, workforce-aligned education programs for the region.

Recognized for Innovation and Community Impact

“The new programs have made a remarkable contribution to the campus’s development, expanding opportunities for students and deepening community partnerships,” said Lillian Nave, faculty and educational development specialist. “This award reflects our appreciation for the meaningful, forward-looking work the department has brought to the Hickory campus, as well as the spirit of teamwork and creativity that continues to move us forward.”

The May 2026 edition of the Hickory Herald, the campus’s official newsletter, praised LTC’s leadership in growing enrollment, strengthening school partnerships, and building the educator pipeline:

“The Department of Learning, Teaching, and Curriculum has demonstrated remarkable vision by launching innovative, workforce-aligned programs that directly respond to regional needs. … Together, these programs expand access, strengthen the educator pipeline, and position the Hickory campus as a leader in community-centered program design.”

Strengthening the Educator Pipeline at App State Hickory

As one of the fastest-growing academic units on the Hickory campus, LTC continues to play a key role in:

  • Increasing enrollment in teacher education programs,
  • Supporting nontraditional and working students,
  • Building partnerships with local schools and districts, and
  • Advancing STEM education in North Carolina.

These efforts position Appalachian State University and the Reich College of Education as leaders in innovative teacher preparation and regional workforce development.
