Dr. Chris Osmond, an associate professor in the Department of Leadership and Educational Studies at Appalachian State University’s Reich College of Education (RCOE), has been named associate director of the doctoral program in educational leadership. His appointment began August 2019.
Osmond earned a Ph.D. in culture, curriculum, and change from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH), an M.A. in curriculum studies and teacher education from Stanford University, and a B.A. in English and Spanish from Wesleyan University.
He joined the RCOE faculty as an assistant professor in 2010. Osmond was promoted to associate professor in 2015. He teaches social foundations of education to undergraduates as well as at the doctoral level and in the Honors College. In addition, he has served on numerous doctoral dissertation panels.
Osmond, who tends to favor arts-based, autobiographical, resolutely qualitative approaches to issues in education, said, “I care most deeply about the preparation of caring professionals for long, thriving careers, especially teachers.”
Osmond regularly contributes to scholarly publications and is a sought-after presenter at regional and national meetings and conferences. His areas of focus are social foundations of education, sustainable practice, interprofessional education and arts education.
Osmond often serves both the campus and the community. He is or has been a member of Appalachian Humanities Council, Strategic Plan Advisory Council, Wilson Scholars selection committee and more.
Osmond participated in Appalachian’s Academic Leadership Development program in 2016-17 and was named 2016 Faculty Member of the Year by Appalachian’s Honors College.
