Dr. Gayle Turner retires after 23 years at Appalachian State University

After 23 years, Dr. Gayle Turner, an associate professor in the Department of Leadership and Educational Studies, is retiring.

Turner taught courses in educational foundation at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Her research focused on social justice in education.

Turner has seen the university grow from a student population of 14,000 when she first arrived to more than 20,000. “There was a very strong focus on teaching and on relationships with students and between faculty that felt very authentic,” she noted.

When asked what she will miss most about App State, Turner said, “My work with students and faculty.”

When asked what she will miss most about App State, Turner said, “My work with students and faculty.”

Her advice for new faculty: “Make sure you have one person on the faculty with whom you can speak candidly and supportively.”

“You will know this when you see it,” she added. “It is essential to a healthy work-life.”
