Dr. Geri Miller Releases Fifth Edition of Book, Learning the Language of Addiction Counseling

Dr. Geri Miller, a professor in the Reich College of Education’s Department of Human Development and Psychological Counselling at Appalachian State University, will have the fifth edition of her book, Learning the Language of Addiction Counseling, released by Wiley Press this November.

Drawing on her experience in the addiction counseling field as a counselor, trainer and educator, the new edition “introduces mental health professionals and students to the field of addiction counseling and helps them acquire the knowledge and develop the skills needed to counsel individuals who are caught in the destructive cycle of addiction.”

Providing an engaging, balanced overview of the major theoretical foundations and clinical best practices in the field that is based on a compassionate accountability, practice-oriented counseling framework, Miller’s book is an important addition to the field of counseling.

The updates to the textbook include:

  • Revised chapters;

  • A new chapter on supervision and mentoring;

  • Additional case studies, interactive exercises, key points, and other resources that facilitate the integration of knowledge into practice;

  • An updated and expanded “Instructor Resources” section, which includes brief video clips, PowerPoint slides, test bank questions for each chapter, and sample syllabi.

“I consider it an honor that I have had the opportunity to write such a book,” said Miller. “My hope is that it can assist counselors helping the addicted individuals and their loved ones live with the chronic, life-threatening disease of addiction.”

Miller has a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and has worked at Appalachian since 1992.

She is a Diplomate in Counseling Psychology, American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP); Licensed Psychologist (LP) (NC); Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) (NC); Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist (LCAS) (NC); Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS )(NC); Master Addiction Counselor (MAC) (NCCAP).

Her research and teaching/training interests include:  academic violence/bullying of faculty; disaster mental health counseling; addictions; multicultural influences; and spirituality.
