Dr. Patricia Levine-Brown Named Interim Director for NCDE

Dr. Patricia (Patti) Levine-Brown has been made the new interim director for the National Center for Developmental Education (NCDE), based in the Reich College of Education (RCOE).  

Levine-Brown received her doctorate in higher education from the University of Texas at Austin, her Ed.S. in higher education from Appalachian State University, and from the University of North Florida she received an M.P.A., a B.A. in liberal studies and completed a certificate in journalism and communications. She has held multiple positions in leadership and education at Florida State College at Jacksonville. 

Her research interests include: 

  • developmental education, 
  • the rural education gap, 
  • student access and success, 
  • online teaching (best practices), 
  • early college and college readiness, and 
  • program design teacher development (best practices). 

Levine-Brown is most looking forward to “our courageous students” this year.

“What a time to be in the midst of Higher Education! In these challenging times our Appalachian State University students continue to forge ahead with positive attitudes and unbelievable exuberance,” she noted. “I am fortunate to have the opportunity to be part of their Appstate experience.” 

“Additionally, I am excited to serve as the interim director of the National Center for Developmental Education,” she added. “Our dedicated staff that also includes Barbara Calderwood and Amanda Rogers, is looking to make this a trail blazing year for the center. Levine-Brown is a proud Mountaineer.

“As a young adult, I spent a good deal of time hiking in and around the Blue Ridge Mountains. Boone was always one of my favorite places,” she said.

In addition to being a part of the Appalachian community, her daughter, Dr. Amanda Cutchens, and her son-in-law, Josh Cutchens, both work at Appalachian. Her daughter is the Assistant Director for Communications and Conferences, and her son-in-law is the Associate Director of Student Conduct. He is also a student in the RCOE Doctoral Program
