Dr. Phillip Johnson Retires After 15 Years at Appalachian State University

After 15 years at Appalachian State University, Dr. Phillip Johnson, a professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences and Director of the Reich College of Education’s (RCOE) Math and Science Education Center, will retire on December 31, 2019.

Though he is looking forward to not being tied to a schedule, Johnson said, “I will miss the camaraderie of my colleagues.”

Prior to his arrival at Appalachian, Johnson taught mathematics at the University of North Carolina Charlotte, Vanderbilt University, the University of Richmond, and Mount Vernon High School in Fairfax County, Virginia. He earned his Ph.D.  and M.A. degrees in mathematics from Vanderbilt University, an M.A. in mathematics from The American University, and a B.S. in mathematics with a minor in science from Appalachian State University.

Since his time as a student at Appalachian, Johnson has seen the enrollment increase and the campus expand.

Though he is looking forward to not being tied to a schedule, Johnson said, “I will miss the camaraderie of my colleagues.”
