Dr. Roma Angel, a professor in the Department of Leadership and Educational Studies, is retiring after 20 years of working in the Reich College of Education (RCOE) at Appalachian State University.
During her tenure, Angel served the university and college in multiple roles:
- RCOE Assistant Dean,
- Program Director of the Masters in School Administration and Education Specialist programs, and
- Associate Director of the Women in Educational Leadership Symposium.
In her role as assistant dean, she grew the International Student Teaching Program into a viable option for placements in Germany, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Ireland.
Additionally, she co-founded a study-away program focused on global issues revealed in local communities. The program was made possible through one of App State’s QEP competitively funded grants and included community-based, off-campus study, which served faculty and staff from a number of campus programs over a four-year period.
She was also the recipient of the Cratis D. Williams School of Graduate Studies Award for Membership in the Academy of Outstanding Graduate Mentors for 2018-2019.
Angel noted that “Appalachian has grown into a well-known university with an excellent reputation for its professional and academic programs.”
“The attention to campus beautification and efforts toward sustainability and inclusive excellence are notable,” she added.
“I will miss my many professional colleagues and our meaningful conversations about teaching, research, and collaborative approaches to leadership.”
“I will miss my many professional colleagues and our meaningful conversations about teaching, research, and collaborative approaches to leadership,” said Angel. “I will definitely miss seeing and taking walks on the beautiful campus.”
Angel's advice to new faculty: “Spend some time getting to know the various resources available to you and find a good mentor to support you through the initial phases of your work. Enjoy every minute of your time!”
For her retirement plans, Angel hopes for “the usual retirement -- one with more time for my husband, daughter, grandchildren, and extended family. I hope to complete a few of my ongoing creative projects!”
“I plan to travel more, paint more, read more, and reinvent my home spaces for non-work purposes,” she added.
