Margaret Hardin, the administrative support specialist for student services in the Department of Counseling, Family Therapy, and Higher Education, is retiring at the end of this calendar year. She has been with Appalachian State University for twenty-six years.
Hardin noted over the past two and half decades the biggest change she has witnessed at App State has been the increased use of technology, which, “has enabled us to move almost exclusively from paper to electronic and to utilize Zoom for meetings.”
She shared that as an App State alumna, “it has been a privilege to provide the same level of care and support to students today that I received when I was a student here in the 70s.”
Hardin’s advice to staff just beginning their careers:
- Maintain a healthy work-life balance.
- Practice self-care.
- Practice gratitude.
- Be kind to each other.
- Help others.
- Keep things in perspective.
- Accept what you can't change.
Though she will miss seeing her friends and colleagues on a daily basis, she is looking forward to reading, walking, cooking with her husband, spending time with family and friends, being more involved in her church and community and, hopefully, traveling to Ireland and Scotland.
