The James Center for Student Success and Advising Expands Advising Load

The James Center for Student Success and Advising in Appalachian State University’s Reich College of Education (RCOE) is growing by leaps and bounds!

Beginning this semester, the James Center welcomed their newest academic advisor, Rebecca Murray, to their advising team. With Murray, there are now three professional advisors available to provide advising assistance to students as they complete their degree programs.

In addition to a new advisor, the James Center will be providing academic advising to the middle grades education students entering for the 2020-2021 academic year. Middle grades education students declaring their major this 2019-2020 academic year as well as those who declared their major prior to this academic year will continue to be assigned a faculty advisor in the middle grades department. The center will transition with the new middle grades students during the upcoming orientation season.

“We have a capable and student-focused team of professional advisors that are working to provide timely support to ensure all the students we serve persist and excel toward their graduation date.”

“We are extremely proud of the growth of our advising services thanks to the efforts of our fantastic advising team -- Dr. Alicia Muhammad, Mel Falck, and Rebecca Murray,” said Ike Smith, Director of the James Center for Student Success and Advising. “Advising middle grades majors is yet another example of the fact that the James Center exists to ensure the success of all teacher education students.”

Dr. Alicia Muhammad, Associate Director for Retention Initiatives, is excited for the opportunity to work with more students across education majors. She stated, “We have a capable and student-focused team of professional advisors that are working to provide timely support to ensure all the students we serve persist and excel toward their graduation date.”

The James Center is located on the first floor of the Reich College of Education building - Suite 105 - and works to recruit, advise, provide professional development, and retain teacher education majors during their tenure at Appalachian State to ensure their success for a career in education.
