Karen Broome Retires After 30 Years with the State of North Carolina

Karen Broome, Regional Consultant Special Education for Appalachian State University’s Reich College of Education (RCOE), will retire on December 31, 2019. Her position was located at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. 

“During her time here at Appalachian, Karen has brought in numerous grants to advance the work of ensuring students with disabilities develop intellectually, physically, emotionally, and vocationally,” said Dr. Melba Spooner, Dean of the RCOE.

“Working remotely as an educational consultant in the field, I appreciate the support and resources made available to our public school systems in North Carolina,” said Broome.

“The strong partnership between Appalachian State University and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction enhances the services provided to our local education agencies. The collaborative work focused on educational excellence has a positive impact on student growth.”

Broome joined the RCOE in 2013. Prior to her arrival, she served as a teacher, an elementary and middle school principal, and director of exceptional children’s programs in Wilkes County Schools. She earned her bachelor’s degree in family and consumer sciences from Appalachian State University in 1988 and her master’s degree in school administration from Gardner-Webb University in 2005.
