Karen Caldwell Awarded HRSA Grant

Dr. Karen Caldwell, a professor in the Department of Human Development and Psychological Counseling, has been awarded a Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training (BHWET) Program grant from the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

Year one funding totals $417,472.00. 

The purpose of the project is to improve the availability of culturally sensitive behavioral health services in the Appalachian region through recruitment and training of Marriage and Family Therapy and Clinical Mental Health Counseling interns committed to careers serving this population. 

First-year funding will support 35 students with $10,000 stipends for each during their final internship experiences as well as 12.5% of Dr. Caldwell's salary to support a course release in the spring of 2018.

If the federal budget allows, the funding will extend to four years for a total of $1,754,806 combined direct and indirect costs. Funding for future years includes 25% of Dr. Caldwell's salary to support a course release in the fall and a course release in the spring of each year.
