Two students majoring in teacher education, one at Appalachian State University’s Reich College of Education and one at Lees-McRae College, have been awarded scholarships from the Alpha Gamma chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. The Appalachian recipient is Karla Starnes (Pictured: Karla with her dog, Sydney. Sydney is a registered therapy dog. Karla has huge goals, including making a difference in the lives of middle schoolers through art.
“I want to be an inspiration to students who are in the awkward years,” she said in her application.
When asked how she could become an influential leader, Karla said she believes it is important to show all students how much potential they have and to be a source of support.
“I am so excited to be a ‘warm’ soul to children who may not have that experience with any other adult,” she added.
