Krista Terry Named 2018 UNC System Academic Affairs Faculty Fellow

Dr. Krista Terry, an associate professor of Instructional Design and Technology in the Department of Leadership and Educational Studies at Appalachian State University's Reich College of Education, has been named a Faculty Fellow in the Academic Affairs division of the University of North Carolina System. The fellowship period is from January 1 to December 31, 2018.

During her fellowship, Terry's focus will be on collaborating with multiple stakeholders within the system to design, develop, and deliver a competency-based online learning program focused on learning design and instructional innovation.

This is the third year of the Academic Affairs Faculty Fellowship Program, the purpose of which is to engage interested faculty members in academic affairs issues and mentored learning opportunities, and to recruit committed faculty with expertise that can help promote the effectiveness of the UNC System and the University's constituent institutions.

About Krista Terry

Terry earned a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction with a concentration in instructional design and technology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), an M.A. in English from Radford University, and a dual B.A. in English and communications arts and sciences from Lyndon State College.

Terry joined Appalachian in 2010 as an assistant professor; she was promoted to associate professor in 2015. She teaches online and hybrid graduate courses in instructional technology/educational media and higher education.

Her previous positions include:

  • Director of the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning at Radford University;
  • Adjunct instructor in the Department of Learning Sciences and Technologies, manager of the Educational Technology Lab and instructional designer at Virginia Tech;
  • Director of Instructional Design and Technology for the College of Education at Troy State University;
  • Project manager at Interactive Design and Development, Blacksburg, Virginia.

In addition, she continues to work as an instructional design and online learning consultant for educational institutions/associations and private sector businesses.

Terry is an accomplished speaker and presenter. Since 2005, she has given 20+ keynotes and invited presentations at local, regional and national events and conferences. In addition, she is a regular presenter at industry conferences - state, regional, national and international.

Terry is the co-author of "Utilizing Virtual and Personal Learning Environments
for Optimal Learning" with Appalachian colleague, Dr. Amy Cheney. She has authored several book chapters focused on online learning as well as numerous journal articles.

She is past President of the International Society of Exploring Teaching and Learning (ISETL), and an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (IJTLHE). Her current professional and research interests are focused on designing effective, evidence-based online learning strategies and methods.

About the Academic Affairs Faculty Fellowship Program

This fellowship offers a unique opportunity to become familiar with system, state, and national challenges in public higher education. Fellows will assume responsibility for special projects, as well as participate in ongoing activities in the Division of Academic Affairs. Enhancing understanding of the complex landscape of public higher education, understanding the context for system-level decision making, contributing to system-wide activities and initiatives in service to the University's 17 constituent institutions, sharpening faculty expertise and extending faculty experience in university administration–these are the primary goals of this program.
