Lakin Stanfield Awarded Delta Kappa Gamma Scholarship

Elementary education major Lakin Stanfield has been awarded the Marilyn F. Grinwis Gray Scholarship from the North Carolina Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Foundation. The $3000 scholarship is awarded to five elementary education and music education majors from colleges and universities in North Carolina each year.

Stanfield and her family relocated from Grand Junction, Colorado, to Rutherfordton, North Carolina, in the summer of 2016. During that time she has become very involved with serving her community through volunteer work, currently mentoring and tutoring with the Reaching Rutherford’s Youth Program.

Stanfield returned to school ten years after she first began her academic career at Colby Community College in Colby, Kansas. She chose Appalachian State University because it offered a program that was not only flexible but also accessible. “Being a mother of three kids and a military wife, I needed to pick my program wisely. App State has been all of that and beyond!”

The idea of teaching elementary school came to fruition after homeschooling her children. “I not only enjoyed teaching them but found myself up at night researching curriculum and lesson plans,” said Stanfield. “I am happy to share that the same curiosity about education has not waned throughout this program. In fact, I believe it has transformed a spark into a flame!”

After graduating, Stanfield plans to continue her education through the Accelerated Admissions program, pursuing a master of arts degree in reading education.

“This scholarship will make an enormous impact on my ability to pursue further education and become a leader in my community.”

“This scholarship will make an enormous impact on my ability to pursue further education and become a leader in my community,” said Stanfield.

The scholarship is made possible through the generous bequest of Marilyn F. Grinwis Gray, for whom the scholarship is named. She was passionate about the fields of study in elementary and music education throughout her career in education.
