Women in Educational Leadership Symposium is October 5-6, 2018

The third annual Women in Educational Leadership Symposium (WIELS) will be held on the campus of Appalachian State University, Friday, October 5 and Saturday, October 6, 2018.

Keynote speakers are:

  • Dr. Carol L. Folt, Chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
  • Dr. Leslie Atcher Alexander, Principal of R. J. Reynolds High School
  • Kathleen Ciez-Volz, Associate Provost at Florida State College

WIELS is a partnership between faculty members in RCOE's Department of Leadership and Educational Studies and practicing educators. The partnership aims to equip women with pragmatic knowledge, skills, and dispositions that prepare them for success as educational leaders.

The symposium theme is Advancing the Leader Within: Building Capacity. Participants will:

  • Learn from and interact with scholars and leaders in education
  • Select concurrent sessions involving best practices and research
  • Engage in critical conversations about issues affecting women
  • Meet with mentors to develop action plans
  • Participate in, or observe role plays related to real-world job scenarios

WIELS invites attendees from all sectors involved in educational leadership. Appalachian students are also welcome.

Cost for the conference includes dinner Friday night, as well as breakfast, lunch, and breaks on Saturday.

Special Rates:

$100 - Appalachian Faculty/ Staff by September 21

$100 - K-12 Educator by September 21

About the Keynote Speakers

Dr. Carol L. Folt, Chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Folt is the 11th Chancellor at UNC-Chapel Hill. An internationally recognized life scientist, award-winning teacher and accomplished academic leader, Folt has worked to fulfill her leadership mission by placing Carolina's students at the center, advancing the university's academic excellence, championing Carolina as a leading global public research university and focusing on innovation that translates next-generation ideas into real-world applications.

Under Folt's leadership, in 2017 the university launched Carolina's The Blueprint for Next – the first unifying strategic framework for the future of Carolina in its history. She is also leading the university's Campaign for Carolina, a $4.25 billion campaign dedicated to using every dollar to advance the public good.

Folt came to Carolina in 2013 from Dartmouth College where she spent 30 years as a teacher and academic leader. She served as interim president in 2012-2013 and as a faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences, Dean of the Faculty and Provost.

Dr. Leslie Atcher Alexander, Principal of R. J. Reynolds High School

Alexander currently serves as an Administrative Leader in the Winston Salem Forsyth County School District.  During her tenure with WS/FCS, Alexander has served as principal of RJ Reynolds and JF Kennedy High Schools, a curriculum coordinator, a literacy specialist and teacher.  She has been instrumental in restructuring curriculum priorities, implementing innovative programs, increasing community relations and ensuring academic excellence.

Alexander’s research interests involve feminist issues that affect women who serve as leaders in educational administration. Her professional memberships include Magnet Schools of America, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) and North Carolina Association of School Administrators (NCASA). 

She has been recognized for her accomplishments earning “The Signature School Award” in 2015 and 2017, WS/FCS District Principal of the Year in 2017, Magnet School Principal of the Year in 2016, and Winston -Salem Outstanding Women Leaders Award in 2018.

Dr. Kathleen Ciez-Volz, Associate Provost at Florida State College

Ciez-Volz currently serves as Associate Provost of Curriculum and Instruction at Florida State College at Jacksonville, where she works with teams of dedicated professionals in Curriculum Services, the Library and Learning Commons, the Office of Academic Engagement and the Center for Civic Engagement, as well as the College’s Developmental Education program. 

Ciez-Volz holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from the University of Florida and a doctoral degree in higher educational administration from the University of Texas at Austin.  She enjoys collaborating with faculty and staff on the creation and enhancement of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and academic support for the college’s diverse body of students.
