After 21 years at Appalachian State University, Dr. Karen Caldwell, professor in the Department of Human Development and Psychological Counseling, which is housed in the Reich College of Education, is retiring.
As a faculty member, she taught in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program and served as the coordinator for the Expressive Arts Therapy Certificate.
When asked what she will miss the most about App State, Caldwell said, “The students and the opportunities to learn new things.”
During her time at App State, Caldwell noted the university has gone through several changes. “Student enrollment has doubled, and there are many new buildings. Lots of changes in faculty and staff.”
Caldwell’s advice to those faculty who are just starting their careers: “Be kind to yourself.”
Caldwell is looking forward to retirement. “I have a private practice focused on adult mental health using expressive arts therapy approaches. I'm also looking forward to long walks with my dog and water aerobics with friends.”
