Adam Warren ’07 ’09 has been named director of the Reich College of Education’s (RCOE) James Center for Student Success and Advising. His appointment begins on March 23, 2022.
“I am most excited for starting a new role and to see students back on campus, engaging with one another, finding their pathways, and formulating their plans after graduation,” said Warren. “I'm excited to see how our RCOE students can prepare themselves to be impactful and powerful teachers and learners during their college career and as they transition to their own next steps, whether it be the classroom, graduate school, or another opportunity.”
As the director, Warren supports the James Center’s mission to recruit, advise, retain, and graduate undergraduate teacher education majors at Appalachian State University. He and his team work as part of the overall teacher preparation program in the RCOE, as well as overseeing all activities related to the Appalachian Community of Education Scholars (ACES), App Educators club, and teacher education majors.
The James Center, located on the first floor of the RCOE, strives to help students connect with peers, discover resources, participate in professional development, serve the campus and community, and more. The center’s mission is to be a space in the college that espouses a commitment to the growth, development, and well-being of education practitioners at App State so they can reimagine a sustained vision of a transformed education system, culture, and climate for the districts, schools, classrooms, and -- most importantly -- students they will serve throughout their professional lifetimes.
Originally from Wilkes County, North Carolina, he visited the campus for several cultural and sporting events. As a middle school student, he had the opportunity to hear Elie Wiesel, author of Night, present on campus. “Hearing him speak was extremely impactful on a young Adam!”
For Warren, App State is an institution focused on community and individual relationships. “I have always felt known, understood, appreciated, and supported in my time as a student and as a professional. Appalachian is my home.”
Warren earned an M.A. in history and a B.S. in history secondary education from App State.
Before joining the RCOE staff, Warren taught high school history at Caldwell Early College High School in Lenoir, North Carolina, and was an academic advisor for App State’s ACCESS program. Most recently, he served as the program director for App State’s College Advising Corps.
Warren enjoys hiking with his wife and two young sons, as well as reading and playing video games. Along with his chosen fandom, his office includes many LEGO sets. “Building LEGO with my oldest is a bonding experience, and the adult LEGO sets are awesome to start a plan and finish a project to completion,” he added.
“I'm the son, brother, husband, and son-in-law of educators and all of these wonderful people in my life came through the RCOE,” said Warren. “I'm excited to support students through the department that prepared me in such fabulous ways.”
