Welcome new staff members to Appalachian State University's Reich College of Education. Read on to learn about everyone and why they joined the staff:

Paige Sturgill ’13 ’24

James Center for Student Success and Advising - ACES Coordinator

Sturgill leads and coordinates the Appalachian Community of Education Scholars (ACES) program, which is housed in the James Center for Student Success and Advising. ACES offers students academic opportunities and real-world experiences that prepare them for their future careers in education.

Sturgill earned a Bachelor of Science in elementary education and a Master of School Administration, both from App State.

Prior to joining the staff at App State, Sturgill taught elementary education for 11 years, which also included leading the Academically and Intellectually Gifted program.

Why Appalachian?-

“App State feels like a second home to me after becoming a double alumna last year. It felt natural to want to come and explore the work environment here in the college. I have had excellent experiences and would like to continue to help that legacy live on!”

Katie Lunsford

Office of Field Experiences - Clinical Field Experiences Supervisor

As a clinical educator, Lunsford works with students in their field placements, providing guidance, feedback, and support as they develop their skills and prepare for their future careers as educators.

Lunsford earned a Bachelor of Science in elementary education from Lenoir-Rhyne University and a Master of Arts in school administration from Gardner-Webb University.

Prior to joining the Office of Field Experiences, Lunsford taught elementary education — grades second, fifth, and sixth — and served as assistant principal at Claremont Elementary School.

Why Appalachian?

“Throughout my career, I have been continually inspired by the innovation, excellence, and strong sense of community I’ve seen at Appalachian State University. The Reich College of Education, in particular, has consistently stood out for its commitment to preparing students with purpose and integrity. It is truly an honor to join this legacy. I’m excited to contribute to the university’s mission and support future educators as they begin a meaningful and transformative journey in education.”

Chris Tarnowski ’17

Office of Field Experiences - Clinical Internship Specialist

Tarnowski works with the Office of Field Experiences to place student teachers with clinical educators, as well as supports the students throughout their student teaching experience.

Tarnowski earned a Bachelor of Science in English education from Appalachian State University.

Prior to Appalachian, Tarnowski taught English at Watauga High School.

Why Appalachian?

“I not only received my degree from Appalachian, but also met my wife right here in the Reich College of Education. App State holds such a special place for so many students and alumni, and I wanted to come back and work with current students to help them have as positive an experience as I had.”
