The Reich College of Education's (RCOE) Idea Exchange returns with new spring 2019 dates. The event is facilitated by RCOE faculty fellow, Dr. Tracy Smith.
Topic: GREAT EXPERIMENTS: The Risks and Rewards of Teaching-by-Experiment in Higher Education
This idea emerged from many different conversations around the college, with people who are taking risks in their teaching, trying new things, learning, tinkering, overhauling, and revisioning.
Idea Exchange sessions last for one hour, with a 30-minute presentation followed by questions and discussion.

Dionne Busio: Great Experiments using strategies to promote student engagement online and face to face

Busio received her B.S., M.Ed., and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She has held a variety of positions, including lead preschool teacher and early interventionist in her more than 25 years as an early childhood education professional. After completing her Ph.D. in 2016, she became a faculty member at Appalachian State University in January of 2017. She is the director of the birth to kindergarten program. Busio’s research interest focus on pedagogical documentation, inclusion, and teacher preparation.

Morgan Blanton: Great Experiments with NearPod

Blanton will be sharing ideas with faculty regarding lessons she’s learned through experimentation with NearPod. She has used NearPod as an engagement, assessment, and facilitation tool during face-to-face and virtual classes.
Blanton joined the Department of Reading Education and Special Education in fall 2018. She teaches reading methods classes for elementary, middle, and high school pre-service teachers. Her research focuses on teacher effectiveness through eCoaching and reflective practices. What Blanton enjoys most about her work at Appalachian is working with students and colleagues who share her passion for education.
Krista Terry: Great Experiments with with Managing Meaningful Online Learning

Terry will be sharing a variety of ideas and strategies that are focused on engaging online learners in meaningful collaborative and authentic learning activities. The session will focus on the pedagogical as well as the practical strategies of delivering online instruction that engages learners in a variety of activities.
Terry holds a doctorate in curriculum and instruction with a concentration in instructional design and technology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), an M.A. in English from Radford University and a dual B.A. in English and communications arts and sciences from Lyndon State College. She joined the Appalachian faculty in 2010. She teaches online and hybrid graduate courses in the educational media and higher education program areas.
Terry is an accomplished speaker and presenter. Since 2005, she has given more than 20 keynote speeches and invited presentations at local, regional and national events and conferences. She is a regular presenter at industry conferences at the state, regional, national and international levels. In addition, she has just completed a faculty fellowship with the University of North Carolina System’s Division of Academic Affairs (Krista Terry named 2018 UNC System Academic Affairs Faculty Fellow).
About Idea Exchange
In the Spring 2015 semester, RCOE began a new tradition and faculty development model – to showcase and share faculty's great teaching practices.
Idea Exchange provides an opportunity for faculty to share practices that they are trying and to receive feedback from colleagues. In addition, the RCOE community has the chance to hear innovative ideas and to engage together in practices that matter.
The theme for the first series (Spring 2015) was “Providing Meaningful, Substantive Feedback to Students.” The theme for the second series (2015-16) was “The Discussion of Pedagogy.” In 2016-17, the theme for the third series was “Using Technology to Invite and Cultivate Communities of Practice.”
