Recipients of the James Scholarship are required to participate in the Appalachian Community of Education Scholars (ACES) Residential Learning Community and to teach in North Carolina for four years after graduation from Appalachian.

Judy James is an Appalachian alumna; she earned a B.S. in elementary education in 1969. The James Center for Appalachian Educators is named for the James'.
