The Department of Counseling, Family Therapy and Higher Education at Appalachian State University offers graduate programs that prepare students for human services careers in a variety of settings — including K–12 schools, colleges and universities and mental health agencies. The department's undergraduate minor in leadership studies is offered in partnership with App State's Office of Community-Engaged Leadership and provides students with an opportunity to develop leadership knowledge and skills.

The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program builds a community of practice guiding students to become competent, ethical counselors serving diverse clients.

Marriage and Family Therapy
The Marriage and Family Program prepares students to work with individuals, couples, and families in a variety of clinical settings.
