Founded in Appalachian State University’s centennial year, the Rhododendron Society honors graduates of the Reich College of Education whose distinguished service as teachers, librarians, administrators, or human service professionals reflects great credit on themselves, the field of education, and App State.
The society carries forward the legacy of B.B. Dougherty, who, in 1899, established a teacher training institute with vision and purpose—laying the foundation for generations of educators dedicated to transforming lives and communities.
The rhododendron, native to North Carolina and abundant across our mountain campus, serves as a fitting symbol. It also connects to university tradition: The Rhododendron was once the name of App State’s yearbook, capturing the achievements and spirit of our students through the decades.
Through the Rhododendron Society, the Reich College of Education celebrates the enduring impact and accomplishments of our alumni who continue to advance Dougherty’s vision of education as a force for good.
