Each academic college offers scholarships for students who have identified their major or future career path. Many scholarships include mentorship, research opportunities and select opportunities for experiential learning.
Undergraduate Scholarships
Current App State students can apply to all available RCOE scholarships through the Appalachian Scholarship Application Portal (ASAP). Scholarship applications generally open December 1 and close February 1.
Incoming first-year and transfer student scholarship opportunities are available through your MyMountaineer Portal. Some scholarships apply automatic consideration based on your admissions application. Visit the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships for current deadline information.
Incoming First-Year Scholarships
Reich College of Education first-year student scholarships are awards to top first-year students. These highly competitive scholarships consist of merit-based and need-based opportunities and provide varying awards.
App State offers a variety of merit-based and need-based scholarships for first-year students, with awards ranging from partial to full institutional costs.
To be guaranteed consideration for most university scholarships, complete these steps:
- Apply for admission by Nov. 15
Students who meet the academic qualifications and the admission application deadlines will automatically be considered for the Appalachian Excellence Scholarship (AES). Awards are up to $3,000 per year for in-state students and up to $4,000 per year for out-of-state students.
All incoming recipients are part of the Appalachian Community of Educators, which promotes teacher leadership through rich, multifaceted programming focused on mentoring, leadership, service, and professional development. The Reich College of Education is committed to providing incoming students the opportunity to pursue higher education and attain the necessary skills to achieve excellence in their future classrooms.

Graduate Scholarships
Graduate students can apply for all RCOE scholarships through the Appalachian Scholarship Application Portal (ASAP). Additional financial support opportunities are available through the Cratis D. Williams School of Graduate Studies.
James Patterson Teacher Education Scholarship
In June 2012, bestselling author James Patterson began funding scholarships in Appalachian State University’s Reich College of Education. Through the Patterson Family Foundation, the James Patterson Teacher Education Scholarships provide support for undergraduate and graduate students preparing for teaching careers.
The scholarships cover tuition and related expenses, with recipients selected based on their potential to become leaders in education. For many Patterson Scholars, this support has turned the dream of attending college into a reality.
