MLIS Program Student Advising Handbook

The MLIS Program faculty have developed a Student Advising Handbook that serves as a compass to guide students through the MLIS Program.  Please refer to the Handbook for information on programs of study, elective offerings, student groups, and more.

Capstone Digital Portfolio Description

Students will document and provide reflection on their experiences in the program through the creation of a digital portfolio in their final semester. This capstone project connects student work and assessment throughout the program to learning objectives and outcomes. Learn more about the capstone portfolio.

MLIS Student Groups

The Library and Information Science Student Association (LSSA) is a faculty-led advisory group for students. Current LSSA members attend monthly meetings with the faculty advisor where they have the opportunity to review aspects of the current LIS program and make suggestions for improvement, if needed. For more information about this group or to join, please contact Dr. Jennifer Luekemeyer.

The App State Student Chapter of the American Library Association (ALA) is a student-led organization affiliated with the ALA. It has a designated faculty advisor and meets regularly to plan events throughout the year. The chapter offers LIS students the opportunity to participate in leadership roles through elected student officer positions, build community through volunteer work, and a chance to connect with the broader library profession. For more information about this group or to join, please contact Dr. Alex McAllister.

Employment Resources

MLIS students can access a variety of career development resources to support their professional growth and job search. The App State Career Development Center offers career counseling, job and internship search assistance, résumé and cover letter reviews, interview preparation, and networking opportunities. Students are also encouraged to connect with the Reich College of Education through the college’s LinkedIn page, where they can engage with alumni, learn about career opportunities, and stay informed about professional events and industry trends.
