Brandi Chapman is an instructor in the Department of Child Development, Literacy, and Special Education at Appalachian State University and a doctoral candidate in Literacy, Language, and Culture at Clemson University. She is expected to defend her dissertation in fall 2026 and transition to the role of assistant professor the following year.
Chapman's research examines teachers' development in early literacy instruction across career stages, with a particular focus on instructional decision-making. Her work explores how teachers make decisions about reading and writing instruction and how those decisions are shaped by individual teacher characteristics, classroom and school contexts, and broader social and policy environments. She is especially interested in how educators plan instruction, select materials and respond to students during literacy learning.
With 14 years of experience in education, Chapman has served as an early elementary teacher, literacy interventionist and literacy coach in South Carolina. She also taught undergraduate literacy courses for three years as a Graduate Teacher of Record at Clemson University.
Chapman holds a Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education and a Master of Education in Literacy from Clemson University. She is also National Board Certified in Early and Middle Childhood Literacy.
Her scholarly work has been published in Literacy Research and Instruction and Teaching and Teacher Education, and she has presented her research at national conferences, including the annual meetings of the Literacy Research Association (LRA) and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). She is an active member of LRA, NCTE and the American Educational Research Association (AERA).
