Eligibility

If you are a transfer student or have already received a Master's degree, please contact the program director, Dr. Kim Becnel, to inquire about potential course waivers.

Application Requirements

  • Completed online application to graduate school.
  • Resume.
  • Unofficial transcripts (or evaluated transcripts for degrees and coursework earned outside of the United States) should be uploaded showing any completed degrees and coursework.
    • Note: Official transcripts will be required prior to enrolling.
  • Two Letters of Recommendation (letters should come from non-family members and evaluate academic or job performance).
  • Application fee.
  • A 300-500 word statement of purpose, in which applicants discuss what interests them about library science, what their career goals are, and why they would like to pursue an MLS at Appalachian State University.

Note: An admission exam is not required for this program.

MLIS students have access to a variety of financial support opportunities to help fund their graduate education. Students are encouraged to apply for financial aid, explore graduate scholarships and assistantships available through App State, and review scholarships specifically for Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) students. Many scholarship opportunities can be found and applied for through the Appalachian Scholarship Application Portal (ASAP), which matches students with awards for which they may be eligible. Taking advantage of these resources can help reduce educational costs while supporting academic and professional success.
